Exciting times for Assam and education lovers! On Monday, the Lok Sabha gave a green signal to the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025. This bill allows the birth of a brand-new star in India’s top business schools – IIM Guwahati. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced this game-changing bill. Here’s the masala – IIM Guwahati will now join the big league of Institutes of National Importance (INI). To juice this up, the government will pump in a juicy corpus fund of Rs 555 crore spread over five years, from 2025-26 to 2029-30. And guess what? The bill spells out that after these five years, IIM Guwahati will be a self-made superstar, generating enough money on its own. No more hand-holding by the government! Currently, India boasts 21 IIMs recognized as top INIs, but IIM Guwahati will be the second shining gem in the North-East after Shillong. This move is part of a bigger picture drawn from the Memorandum of Settlement signed between the Government of India, Assam’s state government, and United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA). This deal hopes to fuel Assam's rise with special developmental packages, and IIM Guwahati is a proud flagship project. Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared more juicy details. The new institute will have the strong mentorship of the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad. Classes will begin this year at a temporary campus, while the permanent and grand campus is planned at Palasbari near Guwahati in Kamrup district. A quick flashback! The original IIM Act was passed in 2017, listing 20 IIMs as institutes of national importance. In 2023, it was updated to add IIM Mumbai (earlier known as the National Institute for Training in Industrial Engineering, Mumbai). With IIM Guwahati stepping in, Assam is all set to join the big league of India’s top educational hubs. It’s a massive boost for students, the economy, and the entire North-Eastern region. The future is looking bright and bustling with opportunities!
