India Raises Duty-Free Limit to ₹75,000 & Simplifies Gold Rules for UAE Travellers from Feb 2026
February 4, 2026
India has announced big changes to its customs baggage rules starting February 2, 2026. The duty-free allowance for travellers arriving by air or sea is increased from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000. This applies to Indian residents, NRIs, people of Indian origin, and foreign nationals with valid visas. Foreign tourists get a ₹25,000 limit, while airline crew have a ₹2,500 cap. UAE travellers will find this boost helpful as many bring electronics, clothes, and accessories home without duties. Another key change is in gold jewellery rules. Previously, travellers faced both weight and value limits on gold. Now, value limits are removed. Passengers abroad for over a year can carry up to 40 grams of gold jewellery for women and 20 grams for men without paying duty. This eases travel for UAE-based Indian expats who often buy gold there. India also allows one laptop per adult duty-free, excludes it from the ₹75,000 cap. Rules for carrying pets and temporary imports are clearer. Passengers can declare baggage online before arrival, speeding up customs clearance. UAE travellers should note the new allowance, simplified gold limits, and use digital declaration to avoid delays. Restricted items like excess alcohol, tobacco, firearms, or commercial goods still face duties. These 2026 baggage rules make customs easier and fairer, helping travellers from the UAE and beyond enjoy smoother trips and less hassle at Indian airports.
