India Raises Duty-Free Limit to ₹75,000 for UAE and International Travellers
February 4, 2026
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has updated India's duty-free allowance for travellers. Now, Indian residents and Indian-origin passengers coming from abroad, including those living in the UAE, can bring goods worth up to ₹75,000 without paying customs duty. Earlier, the limit was ₹50,000. Foreign tourists have a separate limit of ₹25,000, while foreign nationals with non-tourist visas get the ₹75,000 benefit. Airline crew members receive ₹2,500 duty-free.
Items must be carried personally or in accompanied baggage to qualify. Anything above the allowed value will incur customs duty. Travellers can bring popular items like gadgets, clothes, and personal effects for personal use duty-free.
One big perk: passengers above 18 can bring one laptop or notebook duty-free on top of the ₹75,000 limit. Each traveller can also carry up to 2 liters of liquor and 100 cigarettes or 25 cigars without duty.
New rules on jewellery limit duty-free carry by weight: women can carry up to 40 grams, others up to 20 grams, replacing old value-based limits. This change aims to reduce disputes at airports.
Long-term residents returning from the UAE can use Transfer of Residence benefits to bring household items with higher duty-free limits.
India has also introduced electronic baggage declarations to help passengers declare goods before arrival for quicker clearance. High-value purchases can now be verified easily by customs.
Passengers carrying items exceeding limits should declare them at the Red Channel to avoid fines, confiscation, or legal trouble.
