A Bengali artist duo known as Bob and Bobby has faced a ban on several of their animated videos on Instagram in India. Their Instagram pages ‘almost_bobby’ and ‘bob_almost’ remain active, but some of their most viewed content is now blocked in India. The duo shared on February 2 that legal requests from law enforcement led to this restriction. The artists, twin brothers from Kolkata, use satire and humor to highlight social issues. Bob said, "Not sure what triggered it. All the videos were on fictional characters. If you had seen, the characters were completely different looking from anyone living, with different hairstyles and appearances." Bobby added, "We made harmless animated shorts on fictional characters, without any mention of a real name or place. And they got banned." They expressed concern over the growing difficulty of artistic expression in today's socio-political climate. Bobby pointed out, "I think it's because as a society we have been made to forget that in a functioning democracy it's a normal thing to question power." The duo also noted they had received threats before but never faced such a ban. Despite this, Bob and Bobby remain determined to continue their work. They have created backup accounts to archive their art in case further bans take place. This is not the first time cartoonists have faced censorship in India. In 2012, cartoonist Aseem Trivedi was arrested for his anti-corruption cartoons. Veteran cartoonist Manjool has also faced demands to remove posts critical of political leaders. In another case, a Jadavpur University professor was arrested for sharing a cartoon about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and was acquitted after 11 years. The ban on Bob and Bobby’s cartoons adds to ongoing debates about freedom of expression and the power of satire in India.
