Meta failed to remove posts by Australian influencer Dinah, who has 820,000 Instagram followers and promoted Rainbet, an online crypto casino, despite nearly a dozen reports made to the platform. Dinah described herself as “ur Chinese gf in Australia” and in her posts said things like “WHY PAY RENT WHEN U CAN JUST DOUBLE IT???? (ty rainbet! link in bio - helps me out a lot).” Posts showed Dinah using the Rainbet app and running it in videos, with captions encouraging followers to try it. Users reported 10 posts to Meta in January, but Meta largely took no action. A Meta response said, “Our team reviewed the content. They found that is does not go against our community standards on fraud or scam.” Meta has no specific reporting option for gambling promotions. Sometimes Meta restricted posts from teens but allowed them to remain online. As of Tuesday, Dinah’s Instagram profile no longer showed the Rainbet link. Meta declined to comment and the posts remain live. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) warned last year that promoting illegal gambling can earn individuals fines up to $59,400 and up to $2.4 million for influencers linking to illegal services. ACMA said Rainbet has measures to block Australians from accessing its services. Since November 2019, ACMA has blocked 1,455 illegal gambling websites and 220 services left Australia. However, some Australians might still reach blocked sites using VPNs. The lack of Meta’s strong action raises questions on its role in controlling illegal gambling promotion to millions of Australians on social media.
