Balochistan Sees Sharpened Violence as BLA Launches 'Operation Herof 2.0'
February 2, 2026
Balochistan has witnessed a sharp rise in violence as the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) launched 'Operation Herof, Phase 2.0.' This wave of attacks included suicide bombings, armed assaults, and arson across various towns and districts.
Pakistani officials confirm dozens of deaths among civilians and security personnel. In response, Pakistan carried out one of its largest counterterrorism efforts in decades, reportedly killing more than 130 militants in just 48 hours. However, the BLA denies these claims and states it caused heavy losses to Pakistani forces.
This recent surge marks a serious escalation in a long-standing conflict. Balochistan is key to Pakistan’s security and economy with its strategic location, rich minerals, and the China-backed Gwadar port. Experts warn that ongoing violence threatens critical investments and the region's stability.
'Herof' means 'black storm' in Balochi and symbolizes the wave of attacks. The operation spreads across major areas including Quetta, Gwadar, and Turbat. For the first time, women fighters are actively involved alongside men.
Pakistan’s Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti describes the violence as foreign-backed terrorism, blaming India and Afghanistan. Both countries deny the accusations. Locals recall chaotic scenes with militants openly patrolling streets before security forces intervened.
Baloch grievances stem from political disillusionment and harsh crackdowns on protests and activists. Many young Baloch see armed resistance as their only option. The BLA’s leader, Bashir Zaib, recently appeared in new footage near major mining sites, signaling defiance toward Pakistan’s economic plans.
Regional instability in neighboring Iran and Afghanistan adds to the tension, drawing international attention. Pakistan plans to boost security around mining, transport routes, and Chinese projects. Yet, analysts warn that without political solutions, the conflict will worsen.
The crisis in Balochistan has evolved beyond a mere security issue to a political challenge about governance and representation. The 'black storm' of violence reflects deep-rooted unrest that Islamabad must address promptly.
