February 2, 2026
An Australian woman aged 22 has died after becoming trapped in a ski lift at Tsugaike Mountain Resort in Otari, Nagano, Japan. The accident happened around 9:00 a.m. local time on Friday. The woman was riding the two-person Tsuga No.2 Pair Lift with another person when part of her backpack caught on the lift mechanism. Her backpack's unfastened buckle hooked to the chair, while the chest strap remained fastened, causing her to be dragged as she tried to get off.
The lift was stopped immediately after an attendant pressed the emergency button. First aid was given, and the woman was rushed to the hospital. Sadly, she suffered a heart attack and was pronounced dead there.
Tsugaike Mountain Resort and Tsugaike Gondola Lift Company issued a joint apology. Resort CEO Tsuneo Kubo said, "We take this situation very seriously and will strive to operate the ski resort in a safe manner so that our customers can use it with peace of mind." He also expressed "deepest condolences to the bereaved family" and promised to strengthen safety measures.
Police are currently questioning staff and inspecting the lift equipment. The lift operator is cooperating fully with the investigation and reviewing safety processes.
Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed the death and is providing consular support to the family, stating, "We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time. Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment."
Tsugaike Mountain Resort is one of Nagano's largest ski areas and attracts many domestic and international visitors. Authorities are working to find out exactly how the accident happened and to prevent future incidents.
