A 22-year-old Australian snowboarder has died in a ski lift accident at the Tsugaike Mountain resort in Otari, Nagano, Japan. The woman, identified as Brooke Day, sustained critical injuries on Friday after her backpack's unfastened waist belt buckle got hooked on the lift chair, leaving her hanging in mid-air. Her chest strap remained fastened, causing her to be dragged along the snow. The lift was stopped quickly by an attendant who pressed the emergency button. Day was rushed to hospital but suffered what appeared to be a cardiac arrest and later died. The Tsugaike Mountain resort and Tsugaike Gondola Lift Co apologized and promised a full investigation. Their CEO expressed deep condolences to the family and vowed support. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance and sent its deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.
