Starbucks Uses AI Robots to Boost Sales and Customer Service Amid Turnaround
February 2, 2026
Starbucks is using AI robots to improve customer service and sales. At some drive-thrus, AI voices take orders. Inside shops, baristas get help from virtual assistants for recipes and schedules. An inventory scanner counts stock to prevent shortages. This technology is part of Starbucks’ big investment to win back customers after years of falling sales. Last week, Starbucks reported its first US sales rise in two years. CEO Brian Niccol said, "I think that's all going to come. I really do believe we've got the right plan in place." Niccol took charge in 2024 during tough times with rising prices and union protests. He stopped price hikes, simplified menus, and set fast order targets. Starbucks also closed weak stores and sold part of its China business. Niccol stressed Starbucks must focus on customer experience and community. Shops are being refreshed with new chairs, paint, and cups. While AI helps with order flow and cuts wait times, Niccol says it frees staff to focus on hospitality. Plans include expanding overseas to nearly 40,000 stores. Niccol called pricing hikes a last option. He said falling inflation and coffee prices help the outlook. Starbucks still faces union talks and criticism over Niccol's pay. But Niccol said the company will keep investing in staff, saying, "People want these places to gather." He added, "When we can provide the third place that everybody feels safe, welcome and a part of, then I think the Starbucks brand is the solution."
