Jal Jeevan Mission Gets ₹67,600 Crore Budget Despite Irregularities in Several States
February 1, 2026
The Indian government has set aside ₹67,600 crore for the Jal Jeevan Mission in the Financial Year 2026-27. This is slightly higher than the ₹67,000 crore allotted in FY 2025-26. However, the Jal Shakti Ministry expects to spend only about ₹17,000 crore by March 31, 2026. This gap is due to many financial irregularities detected in various states.
States such as Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Gujarat, Assam, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan have taken strong actions like penalties and recovery processes because of poor quality work and monetary mismanagement under the scheme. Uttar Pradesh reported registering investigations into 14,264 complaints.
Gujarat revealed a financial loss of ₹120.65 crore caused by irregularities in 620 villages in Mahisagar district. Recovery orders were issued to 112 implementing agencies. This announcement was made by Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in the Lok Sabha in December 2025.
Across 32 states and union territories, actions were taken against 621 government officials, 969 contractors, and 153 third-party inspectors due to financial irregularities and substandard work.
Since its launch in August 2019, when only 3.23 crore rural homes (16.7%) had tap water, the Jal Jeevan Mission has connected about 12.52 crore more rural households. Now, 15.76 crore rural households or 81.4% of India's rural population access tap water under this mission. The push for clean water continues amid challenges and efforts to clean up the system.
