Broadway Fire Safety Lags a Month After Blaze; Hydrant Plan Slow Amid Water Issues
January 31, 2026
A major fire hit several shops in Broadway a month ago. But fire safety has not improved much yet. Authorities have not made a clear plan to prevent future fires. Roads remain crowded, making it hard for firefighters to move during emergencies.
The District Collector told Kerala Water Authority (KWA) to install fire hydrants quickly in Broadway. But the work is still in early stages. KWA officials are preparing cost estimates for hydrants in Broadway and two other spots. A KWA official doubts how well a hydrant will work because water supply is intermittent. "It would be better to connect the hydrant to an existing water source in the vicinity rather than depend on KWA pipelines," said the official. A Fire and Rescue Services expert said laying pipes in the narrow, crowded streets is hard to do fast.
At Koluthara Bazaar, where a fire destroyed a toy shop and damaged 10 others on December 30, 2025, shop owners have started adding firefighting tools. Mayor V.K. Minimol said a special campaign cleared garbage from streets to reduce fire risk. "The area around the market has already been cleared. Stakeholders have been instructed to bring to our notice any instances of garbage piling up that they come across," the Mayor said.
In a separate event, a scrap godown near Ernakulam South overbridge caught fire on Saturday afternoon. Fire teams from Club Road and Gandhi Nagar quickly put out the fire. No one was hurt.
