Vilankombai Tribal Women Seek Monthly Food Relief Over Malnutrition and Crop Damage
January 30, 2026
Women in Vilankombai, a tribal settlement inside Tamil Nadu’s Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve, have asked the government for monthly food relief kits. They point to growing malnutrition, crop damage by wild animals, and lack of healthcare. The village has 45 Urali tribal families under Kongarpalayam panchayat. Residents say limits on forest access and falling crops have changed traditional diets, causing nutritional problems, especially for women. One resident said, "For generations, we relied on forest produce and locally grown millets to meet our dietary needs. Now, we are unable to raise ragi and other millets on our 105 acres because of recurring crop damage by wild animals such as elephants and wild boar." Frequent crop destruction has made farming less common and cut down on nutrient-rich foods. The shift away from iron-rich traditional food has raised anaemia cases among women. Many families now depend on less healthy food, hurting community health. Healthcare access is another big issue. There are no medical facilities inside the forest area. Residents must travel 7 km through the forest and cross four streams, then 3 km more to reach a hospital in Kongarpalayam. Women highlighted that nearby Karnataka's government provides monthly food kits to tribal groups with items like ragi, rice, pulses, and cooking oil. They want similar help, along with protection for crops from wild animals and better healthcare access. "Such measures would significantly improve the nutritional status and overall welfare of tribal families," said S.C. Natraj, director of NGO SUDAR in Sathyamangalam. He added other hill area residents face similar problems and called for full government action. Recently, S. Annadurai, Director of the Tribal Welfare Department, visited the village and heard these concerns. He promised to start action to address their problems.
