US President Donald Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to pause attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian towns for a week due to "extraordinary cold" weather. Trump said, "I personally asked President Putin not to fire into Kyiv and the various towns for a week, and he agreed to do that." He added, "It was very nice. A lot of people said, 'Don't waste the call, you're not going to get that.' And he [Putin] did it." Trump also noted that Ukrainians "almost didn't believe it, but they were very happy about it because they are struggling badly." Russia has not confirmed the deal. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed Trump’s announcement on social media calling it an "important statement" about security during harsh winter. Zelensky said the agreements were discussed during talks in the United Arab Emirates and his team expects them to be implemented. The BBC reports Ukraine will mirror Russia’s pause by stopping attacks on Russian oil refineries. Last week, Russian, Ukrainian, and US officials met for trilateral talks in the UAE. Although all parties called the talks constructive, no official announcement confirmed Russia's pause. Meanwhile, Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continue, causing large power outages. Millions remain without heat or electricity as repair crews struggle to restore systems while air attacks persist. When power returns, it often lasts only a few hours, enough to charge devices but not to warm homes in the freezing weather.
