Russian Drone Strike Hits Ukrainian Passenger Train, 5 Dead
January 28, 2026
A Russian drone struck a crowded passenger train in northeastern Ukraine, killing five people, officials said. Ukrainian soldier Omar, who was on the train, described the terrifying moments to the BBC. The train was traveling from Chop near Slovakia to Barvinkove, near the front line. The first drone landed near the train, stopping it. Omar said, "Then we heard the rumble of another drone, and then an explosion." A carriage was hit and burst into flames. Omar told passengers to get out immediately, saving many lives. There were 291 people aboard. "After the second hit, I understood that the drone operator was observing what kind of target it was hitting," Omar said. Many passengers escaped, some in deep shock and tears. Omar checked the train afterward, finding one body and a scared young woman with her baby. She was traveling to see her soldier husband near the front. Ukraine’s President Zelensky condemned the strike as terrorism. The attack targeted a vital railway line in the Kharkiv region, damaging Ukraine’s transport backbone. Despite such attacks, Ukraine’s railway company has kept services running on most lines. Flags flew at half-mast in stations across Ukraine and a nationwide minute of silence was held for the victims. Train services on the line resumed hours after the attack.
