January 27, 2026
Osmania University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication unveiled the Sarwat Hussain Digital Media Centre at the University College of Arts and Social Sciences. The centre features cutting-edge digital content tools, including two top professional cameras and a customised Apple Studio computer, valued at nearly ₹20 lakh. The equipment was donated by Vidya Bhandarker in memory of her late husband, Sarwat Hussain, an alumnus who completed his BCJ and MCJ at Osmania University from 1987 to 1989. Sarwat Hussain worked 16 years at ICRISAT before joining the World Bank in 1992. He rose to be head of Communications for the Agricultural Global Practice, retiring in 2017 from Washington, D.C. Ms. Bhandarker said, “The spirit of giving back by alumni in the U.S. is something we both admired deeply. We felt this was something we must do for Osmania University as well.” She urged other OU alumni to reconnect and support their alma mater. Satish Thalladi, Head of the Department of Journalism, said the centre shows the department’s commitment to embracing digital storytelling. Both students and faculty praised the initiative as a valuable addition that honors a distinguished alumnus and boosts journalism education at Osmania University.
