Gauhati High Court Cancels Bail of IAS Officer Talo Potom in Suicide Case
January 24, 2026
GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has cancelled the bail of Arunachal Pradesh IAS officer Talo Potom, named in the suicide notes of a 19-year-old who died in 2025. On January 22, 2026, Justice Yarenjungla Longkumer of the Itanagar Bench ordered the immediate arrest of Potom. He had been granted bail just a week after his arrest. The court criticized the District and Sessions Court at Yupia for granting bail "without proper application of mind." The victim's father appealed to the High Court under Section 483(3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to revoke the bail. The case began after the suicide of the young man found dead at his rented place in Papum Pare district on October 23, 2025. The suicide notes accused Talo Potom and senior engineer Likwang Lowang of sexually exploiting and harassing him for a long time. The notes spoke of "prolonged humiliation, coercion, and threats" leading to his death. Charges included abetment to suicide, sexual exploitation, mental harassment, and corruption against the officers. After the FIR was filed, Lowang shot himself. The High Court stated that the trial court ignored key evidence and made wrong decisions about bail, ignoring the serious nature of the crime which "shocked the collective conscience of the society." The court noted that cancelling bail is rare but justified here due to the unjust and flawed bail order. It also noted that releasing a powerful officer like Potom early could harm the investigation.
