Decentralised Protests Begin for VB-G RAM G Bill Against Rural Employment Law
January 23, 2026
The fight against the new rural employment law, VB-G RAM G Bill, 2025, will be different from the long farmers’ protest. Instead of staying in one place, protests will happen all over India. The first protests start on Republic Day. On this day, gram panchayats meet by law and will be asked to pass resolutions against the new law. NREGA Sangharsh Morcha, a group of NGOs and unions with MGNREGA workers, is leading this campaign. "The new legislation has diluting powers of gram panchayats in many ways, including having a say in what work should be done and where. The new law makes the rural employment programme like any other centrally sponsored scheme where decisions are top down," said Nikhil Dey, a founding member of MGNREGA. The government used gram sabhas before to explain the new law. After Parliament passed it, the Ministry of Rural Development told all states to hold special gram sabhas by December 26, 2025, to discuss it. The campaign will rise more on February 2 with Mahapanchayats in state capitals. This date marks 20 years since MGNREGA was launched. At these meetings, local resolutions against the law will be shared. Mr. Dey believes this could become the "largest decentralised agitation" in the world because MGNREGA workers live in many places across India. On January 22, the NREGA Sangharsh Morcha and Congress party held a national workers' convention in Delhi. Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi spoke to over 300 workers from all over India. A NREGA activist said many workers came to Delhi for the first time and experienced metro trains and city life. He noted that MGNREGA workers and farmers are from different economic backgrounds, so these protests are unique.
