A 29-year-old man, Mayanglambam Rishikant Singh, was shot dead by unidentified masked men in Churachandpur, Manipur, on the night of January 21, 2026. Singh belonged to the Meitei community and lived in Kakching. He was visiting his wife, who belongs to the Kuki-Zo community, in Churachandpur since December 19. Security officials said that four masked men in a black SUV came to their home. Two men entered the house, one carrying a weapon, while two stayed outside. The couple was taken away, but only the wife was released. Singh was taken further and shot dead. A video of the killing was shared on WhatsApp from an IP address in Guwahati around 9:30 p.m. The footage shows Singh terrified and pleading on his knees. The video was titled “no peace no popular governments.” The wife told police she could not identify the attackers. She also said no one but the village chief knew about her husband's visit. The body was recovered and sent for postmortem. Ethnic violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, killing over 250 people. The communities remain separated by buffer zones years after the clashes. Churachandpur is a hill district and a Kuki-Zo stronghold. Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, 2025.
