Kerala High Court Asks Govt to Respond on Compensation for Wayanad No Go Zone Lands
January 21, 2026
The Kerala High Court has asked both the Central and State governments to respond to a petition seeking compensation for lands in areas of Wayanad hit by landslides. These lands, located in Meppadi panchayat, were taken over by the government after the deadly landslides in July 2024. The area was then declared a ‘No Go Zone’, which means no construction is allowed there.
The petitioners demand compensation for their land under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013. They are also asking for proper rehabilitation measures to help those affected. This case highlights the struggle of landowners whose lands are frozen due to unsafe conditions set by the government.
The High Court’s call for response means both State and Central governments must clarify their positions on compensation and rehabilitation soon.
