Europe Warns Trump Over Greenland Tariffs, Calls for Strong EU Response
January 19, 2026
European industry has strongly opposed Donald Trump's threat to impose tariffs over Greenland. Trump said he may add 10% tariffs in February and 25% in June on European goods. Hildegard Müller, president of Germany's auto industry group VDA, said, "The costs of these additional tariffs would be enormous for German and European industry, especially in these already challenging times." She called for a "smart, strategic response" from Brussels, coordinated with affected countries.
The new tariffs threat disrupts a calm phase after last year's EU-US trade deal signed at Trump’s Scottish golf course. European leaders plan to meet in Brussels on Thursday to discuss counter-tariffs on US exports, potentially hitting products like liquid gas, aircraft, and machinery.
Bertram Kawlath, head of the German engineering association VDMA, warned, "If the EU gives in here, it will only encourage the US president to make the next ludicrous demand and threaten further tariffs." Volker Treier from the German Chamber of Commerce said it was wrong to link politics and trade: "Highly controversial political goals are being tied to economic sanctions in an unacceptable manner."
The EU has urged calm and hopes talks with the White House can prevent a full trade war. Manufacturers are scrambling to ship goods to the US before tariffs start but face tight deadlines. A UK car industry leader said companies are "reaching for the same golf bag and pulling out the same clubs again" but remain cautious.
Stephen Davies, CEO of Welsh whisky maker Penderyn, warned tariffs "just won’t work" and could harm market presence. Paul Nowak, Trades Union Congress general secretary, said Trump's tariffs "threaten to take a wrecking ball to key British manufacturing sectors and jobs." He urged the UK government to strengthen ties with the EU amid the unstable global economy.
