Kerala to Deliver 300 Houses to Wayanad Landslide Survivors by February 2026
January 19, 2026
Kerala Revenue Minister K. Rajan said on January 19, 2026, that 300 houses for survivors of the deadly Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides in Wayanad will be handed over by February 2026. These houses are part of a larger township of 410 units being built on the Elston Estate near Kalpetta. "Each house is designed to provide a secure and dignified living space for the survivors," Mr. Rajan told the media. The government started fast-tracking land acquisition and construction since late 2024, soon after the July 30, 2024 disaster. The homes will come with all basic facilities ready for occupation. Mr. Rajan also said that the appeals from beneficiaries will be considered before finalizing the list for handover. On a separate issue, Mr. Rajan addressed the Pala Sub Court’s rejection of the government’s petition about ownership rights to the Cheruvally estate. This land is part of the site planned for the Sabarimala airport. He said, "The court verdict was not a setback to the government but the result of procedural lapses." The ownership dispute involves 2,263 acres across Erumeli South and Manimala villages. The Believers Church’s Ayana Charitable Trust and Harrison Malayalam Ltd. are respondents in the case. The government remains firm in its plans despite the legal hurdles.
