Union Government Mulls Micro Credit for Gig Workers; TGPWU Welcomes Move
January 19, 2026
The Union government is thinking about extending micro credit to gig workers. The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) praised the move on Sunday, calling it much needed support for workers often in tough financial spots. TGPWU president Shaik Salauddin said, “The move recognises the economic vulnerabilities of gig, platform and domestic workers. It also encourages their entrepreneurial journeys. Access to small, collateral-free credit can play a transformative role in promoting self-employment, livelihood security and financial inclusion for workers who are often excluded from formal banking systems.” The union hopes that when the scheme is finalised, it will be simple and worker-friendly, requiring minimal paperwork and ensuring transparency.
