In Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, eight cases have been registered against people for sharing AI-generated fake images and misleading information about the Manikarnika Ghat redevelopment on social media platform X. Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Bansal said these posts wrongly showed facts about the ongoing beautification work at the sacred site. Officials mentioned that some images involving Hindu deities were shared to hurt religious feelings and disturb social peace. The complaint was filed by Mano, from Tamil Nadu, whose company is working on strengthening cremation facilities and enhancing the ghat since November 15, 2025. He reported that on January 16 night, an X user shared false AI-made images that misled Hindu devotees and caused unrest. The posts gained many objectionable comments and reposts, further increasing tensions. Mr. Bansal said, "Attempts were made not only to hurt religious sentiments but also to create an anti-government mindset in society." Legal steps are also being taken against those who reposted and commented on these misleading contents. A detailed investigation is ongoing, with police warning that strict action will continue against anyone spreading rumours and false information on social media.
