Trump’s Gaza Peace Panel Faces Big Challenges With No Palestinian Leaders Included
January 17, 2026
The White House has announced the first members of the Gaza "Board of Peace" under US President Donald Trump's plan. The key officials are mostly Americans with no Palestinians on the senior boards so far. This includes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, World Bank President Ajay Banga, and former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair. The other board, called the "Gaza Executive Board," includes political figures from Turkey, Qatar, and UAE and is led by former Bulgarian politician Nickolay Mladenov as High Representative for Gaza.
Dr Ali Shaath, a civil engineer and former Palestinian Authority minister, heads the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG). However, no Palestinian members are on the top two boards. This has sparked criticism. Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian leader, and others oppose Sir Tony Blair's role due to his past in the Iraq war and Britain's colonial history. UN human rights rapporteur Francesca Albanese tweeted: "Tony Blair? Hell no. Hands off Palestine."
President Trump said last year, "I've always liked Tony, but I want to find out that he's an acceptable choice to everybody."
The White House says these boards will work to improve governance, services, peace, and prosperity in Gaza. Still, many questions remain. The top "Board of Peace" led by Trump and possibly including world leaders like UK's Sir Keir Starmer and Turkey’s Erdogan, has yet to be announced.
The situation in Gaza is dire. The UN estimates 80% of buildings are destroyed or damaged. Survivors face harsh winter, food shortages, and lack of shelter. Aid groups blame Israeli restrictions; Israel says it supports humanitarian help but restricts Hamas threats.
Rebuilding Gaza is a massive task. About 60 million tonnes of rubble must be cleared, including dead bodies and unexploded bombs. Maintaining the ceasefire is another huge challenge.
Major General Jasper Jeffers has been named head of the International Stabilization Force. This force, backed by the UN, must ensure Gaza’s demilitarization. But no plan exists on how to disarm Hamas or which countries will send troops.
Hamas demands disarmament only in a full Palestinian state deal. Israel says it will only withdraw if Hamas disarms. This deadlock is seen as the biggest test ahead for the peace efforts.
