The US President Donald Trump’s drive to acquire Greenland has brought a major crisis for Europe and NATO. Denmark and Greenland firmly said no to Trump's demand, highlighting a serious challenge for transatlantic ties. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told Fox News, “Of course we have our red lines. This is 2026, you trade with people but you don’t trade people.” After a tough meeting with US officials, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt appeared emotional, showing the strain the talks caused. The situation has forced Europe to reconsider how it handles the US and NATO alliance. Trump’s push for Greenland is partly about security concerns and partly ego, as he told the New York Times, owning Greenland is “what I feel is psychologically needed for success”. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called the US a partner and promised more political and financial support for Greenland, saying, “Greenland can count on us.” Cyprus’s Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos urged stronger EU-US dialogue, warning against isolation.
