US President Donald Trump announced the creation of a new Gaza "board of peace" on Friday. The board will have seven founding members. It includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and World Bank President Ajay Banga. Trump will chair the board himself. More members will be named soon. Blair's inclusion is controversial due to his 2003 Iraq invasion role. Trump said last year he wanted board members to be "acceptable choice[s] to everybody." The board is a key part of phase two of the US-backed Gaza peace plan. Trump called it the "Greatest and Most Prestigious Board ever assembled at any time, any place." This announcement comes shortly after forming a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee to manage Gaza's daily governance post-war. Gaza native Ali Shaath will lead that committee. Trump also appointed US Major General Jasper Jeffers to lead the International Stabilisation Force in Gaza. The peace plan started on October 10, bringing hostage returns and a pause in fighting between Hamas and Israel. Phase two is now in progress amid aid shortages and ongoing violence. Hamas has not agreed publicly to fully disarm, a key demand from Israel.
