Chennai Trust Urges DMK to Improve Ambedkar Memorial and Raise SC Welfare Funds in 2026 Manifesto
January 16, 2026
A Chennai-based group, People's Educational Trust, has asked the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party to highlight the better maintenance of the Ambedkar Memorial in its 2026 election manifesto. The Trust, which works for Scheduled Castes welfare, says many visit the memorial on April 14 and December 6, but it lacks basic facilities. C. Chellappan, managing trustee and former Member of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, said a library and auditorium could be set up at the nearby Tholkappia Poonga or at the memorial itself.
The Trust also called for installing a large statue of Dr. Ambedkar that is "as majestic as" those found in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Additionally, they want the annual fund for a scheme supporting SC/ST entrepreneurs to rise from ₹100 crore to ₹500 crore. Other demands include expanding the 'Samathuvapuram' rural housing scheme across Tamil Nadu, passing laws for reservation in promotions, backing inter-caste marriages, improving Special Component Plan execution for SCs, and reclaiming Panchami land that is currently encroached.
Lastly, the Trust suggested widening the Tamil Nadu State Commission for SCs/STs' role to address social, educational, and economic issues in these communities. The People's Educational Trust submitted their charter of demands recently and referred to a news report by The Hindu on December 24, 2025. The Trust hopes DMK will include these issues in their upcoming manifesto.
