Fuel Contamination in Kannur Wells Sparks Protests, Locals Demand Immediate Action
January 14, 2026
Protests are growing in Kannur over fuel contamination detected in domestic wells near the Central Jail petrol pump. Nearly a month after Kerala State Pollution Control Board (PCB) found high hydrocarbon levels, no strong action has been taken. Residents say their water is unsafe. The problem was uncovered after a complaint on December 15 from C.H. Surendran, whose well water turned unusable. PCB tested water samples from his and nearby wells. The lab confirmed petrol and diesel pollution likely caused by fuel leaks at the petrol pump. PCB alerted the District Collector, IOCL, and Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). IOCL said pipeline pressure tests showed no leaks, but PCB's senior environmental engineer noted large mineral oil amounts at the fuel outlet site. PCB directed IOCL to fix the problem. On Monday, MLA K.V. Sumesh met the District Collector and stressed urgent steps to stop more environmental harm. The Collector plans a meeting with IOCL, jail officials, and residents soon to decide action. Kannur MP K. Sudhakaran wrote to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, demanding a thorough technical check of underground tanks and facilities at the station to find and plug leaks. The contamination risks public health and demands quick cleanup measures.
