Iran Moves Ahead With Protester Executions Despite Trump’s Warning
January 14, 2026
Iran has announced it will speed up trials and executions of protesters despite warnings from US President Donald Trump. On Wednesday, Iran’s chief justice said, “If we want to do something, we have to do that fast.” A 26-year-old protester, Erfan Soltani, was due to be executed Wednesday, becoming the first sentenced to death in the protests. It remains unclear if his execution proceeded. Human rights groups warn that more executions could follow soon. Trump told CBS News, “If they do such a thing, we will take very strong action.” He also posted on Truth Social urging protesters to “KEEP PROTESTING” and warned the killing must stop. Iranian officials rejected US threats. Protests erupted after a brutal crackdown which left at least 2,571 people dead and over 18,100 arrested, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. Iranian security forces are heavily deployed, and schools remain closed amid fear. Amnesty International expressed concern over swift trials and forced confessions. The US and other Western countries advised citizens to leave Iran immediately. Despite internet blackouts and raids targeting Starlink satellite services, protests continue. Iranian state TV confirmed deaths of “martyrs” in the unrest. Neighbouring countries warned the US against possible military intervention, fearing a regional war with harsh global effects. The situation remains tense as Iran tightens its grip on dissenters while facing international pressure.
