The United Democratic Front (UDF) won the Vizhinjam ward in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation on January 13, 2026. The election was delayed earlier due to a candidate's death. UDF candidate K.H. Sudheer Khan defeated LDF's N.A. Noushad by 83 votes. Sudheer Khan received 2,902 votes, while Noushad polled 2,819. BJP's Sarvashakthipuram Binu came third with 2,437 votes. A former LDF councillor, N.A. Rasheed, who ran as an Independent, polled 118 votes. Rasheed’s votes were pivotal because the winning margin was less than his total. This helped UDF regain control of Vizhinjam ward after 10 years. The win also hurt the BJP’s hopes of securing a majority with 51 seats in the Corporation. Currently, the NDA holds 50 seats and depends on an Independent's support. With Vizhinjam’s win, UDF's strength in the Corporation rose to 20 seats. UDF supporters celebrated by raising slogans and distributing sweets outside the counting centre. Nine candidates contested the election, including rebels.
