DHS Clarifies Viral Video of Immigration Agent Entering Porta-Potty with Handcuffed Man
January 13, 2026
A video showing an immigration agent entering a portable toilet with a handcuffed person has gone viral on social media. The footage was taken in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Many posts suggested the detainee was a woman and criticized the officer's actions, raising concerns about what happened behind the closed door, including possible abuse.
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) responded by clarifying that the detainee was a man who needed to use the restroom. A DHS spokesperson said, "The illegal alien in this video was a male and had to use restroom. We don’t deny people the right to use the bathroom."
DHS explained that it is standard policy never to allow a detainee alone in an enclosed space like a portable toilet. This is to prevent anyone under arrest from barricading themselves inside. DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that this policy is longstanding and applies to all detainees.
Social media reactions were mixed. Some accused the agent of violating privacy or accused the administration of lying. Others said the video was too short to understand what exactly happened after the door closed.
This incident adds to national scrutiny on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) methods, following recent controversies with federal agents in Minneapolis. Last week, an agent there fatally shot a woman, further intensifying public debate.
Comments on social media included:
- "This administration has lied constantly. You have no credibility whatsoever. We don’t believe anything you say. You could say the sun is shining and I’d be heading to the closet to grab my umbrella."
- "Absolutely not you are lying and you know it that is a straight violation of privacy, man or woman."
- "But it’s standard protocol to pick up someone working at Target and then when they verify their citizenship you just dump them miles away?"
The DHS maintains their policy is clear: detainees have the right to restroom access, but must not be left alone in enclosed spaces for security reasons.
