Russia Claims Strike on Ukraine's Lviv Aviation Plant Using Oreshnik Missile
January 13, 2026
On January 12, 2026, Russia announced it struck an aviation repair plant in Ukraine's western Lviv region using its Oreshnik ballistic missile. This is the first time Russia named the target of the strike. Moscow said it fired the missile following claims that Ukraine tried to hit one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences with a drone. Kyiv denied this, and the United States expressed doubts the drone attack happened. The Russian Defence Ministry said, "On the night of January 9th, the Lviv state aircraft repair plant was put out of action by the Oreshnik mobile ground-based missile system." AFP could not verify this claim independently. Ukraine confirmed that a missile was fired at the Lviv region near the EU border and shared photos of missile fragments. It said a "civilian target" was hit but did not give details on damage or exact location. Ukrainian air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat told AFP, "We never comment on where the hit was." Residents near the plant in Rudno reported hearing explosions on the night of January 9 and some experienced gas outages. Russia said Ukraine used the plant to repair Soviet-made MiG-29 jets and US-supplied F-16 fighters. President Putin praised the Oreshnik missile as "impossible" to intercept by modern air defences. This strike marks only the second known combat use of this missile, which can carry conventional or nuclear warheads and reach targets 3,000 to 5,500 kilometres away.
