Karnataka High Court Asks State for 30-Acre Land for New Building in City Centre
January 12, 2026
The Karnataka High Court on Monday ordered to issue a notice to the state government. The court is considering a petition that asks for 30 acres of land in the city’s central business area. The land will be used to build a new, modern High Court building.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Poonacha made the order. The petition was filed in June 2023 by Sharan Desai, a local architect.
The petition says the government had earlier agreed to build a new seven-storied building near the existing main High Court. But it didn’t move ahead, due to problems including construction near Cubbon Park boundaries.
Desai pointed out that staff and court visitors face trouble because different court branches are spread out in many government buildings far from the main court. The petition asks for at least 30 acres in the city center to build a single state-of-the-art building.
The petition was filed when many court branches, earlier housed in the basement of the High Court annexe, were shifted to other buildings. This shift happened after PILs raised questions on using basement floors for court offices.
Desai suggested using land such as that owned by Bangalore Turf Club on Race Course Road, or near Bengaluru Palace Grounds and Bengaluru Golf Club on Sankey Road.
He told the court that Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar recently said the government is searching for land to build a new High Court building.
Currently, the High Court works from Attara Kacheri, built in 1868, and an annexe building built in the 1980s. The court also uses the KGID building and other government buildings away on Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi. This scattered setup causes inconvenience.
The court's notice signals progress toward solving these space problems with a new, centralized building.
