January 11, 2026
Storm Goretti swept across parts of Europe, killing a man in England and leaving tens of thousands without power. UK police reported a man in Helston, Cornwall died after a tree crashed onto his caravan. Record winds hit the region with gusts reaching 160 km/h (100 mph). About 28,000 homes in southwestern England and the Midlands remained powerless by weekend start. Meanwhile, nearly 40,000 French households were still without power by Saturday evening after a peak outage of 380,000. The storm caused heavy snow and ice, prompting closure of 250 schools in Scotland. The UK Met Office warned of black ice disruptions in Scotland and northern England. Germany faced disruptions too; rail services in northern regions were gradually resuming after storm Elli forced cancellations on Friday. The port city of Hamburg was notably impacted by heavy snow, delaying services to Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Hanover, and other cities. Storm Goretti’s icy grip caused travel chaos and power cuts, highlighting Europe’s battle with severe winter weather this week.
