US Public Turns Against ICE After Fatal Minnesota Shooting Amid Trump Crackdown
January 11, 2026
Public opinion of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has taken a nosedive following a shooting in Minnesota. A federal officer killed a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, firing 3-4 times at her face in what police called 'self-defence.' This tragic event has fueled growing anger against ICE's aggressive actions.
A YouGov poll conducted among 2,600 American adults found that 52% disapprove of ICE’s work. Only 39% approve. Around half see ICE’s tactics as too forceful, with just 27% saying they are 'about right.' Sympathy for protesters is rising too, with 44% supporting recent anti-ICE protests while 42% oppose them.
This marks a sharp shift from last year. In February 2025, ICE had a net approval rating of +16. Since then, it has dropped 30 points to -14 as President Trump pushes a tougher immigration crackdown. Plans involve arresting as many as 3,000 people daily, linked to adviser Stephen Miller.
Nearly 60% of Americans now believe there is a kind of war or conflict in US cities. Older citizens feel this most strongly, with 74% of those over 65 agreeing.
Support for abolishing ICE is surging. In September 2024, only 19% supported ending the agency. Now, 42% favor abolition. Among Democrats, 69% back abolishing ICE.
Meanwhile, Trump’s immigration policies are losing popularity. Polls show 54% of Americans disagree with workplace immigration arrests. Another poll says 54% believe ICE has gone too far. The Department of Homeland Security remains very unpopular, though Republican support has increased while Democratic support has declined sharply.
