Kamal Haasan Moves Madras HC to Block Unauthorized Use of His Name and Image
January 11, 2026
Actor Kamal Haasan has filed a John Doe suit in the Madras High Court to protect his personality rights. He wants to stop the use of his name, initials, portraits, and other related images without his approval. The 71-year-old actor is set to have his case heard on January 12, 2026, by Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy.
Kamal Haasan said he has been in the film industry since childhood and built his reputation through his work in arts. He referred to a Chennai-based company named 'Neeye Vidai' which sells T-shirts and shirts with his photos, name, initials, the title 'Ulaganayagan', and famous movie dialogues without his permission.
He requested the court to stop the company and any unknown parties from using his identity unlawfully. His main suit asks for a permanent ban on the unauthorized use of his persona, including the use of new technologies like AI, generative AI, machine learning, deep fakes, and face morphing.
Besides the main suit, Kamal Haasan filed four requests for interim orders to immediately block such misuse. He stressed that no one should create or share products or content like clothes, coffee mugs, or posters that use his image or name without permission.
The actor presented the court with examples of products to prove how 'Neeye Vidai' had violated his personality rights. He pointed out these acts wrongly suggest that he endorsed those products, which is not true.
