A man in his 50s was killed in southwest England after a tree fell on his caravan during Storm Goretti. The incident happened in Helston, Cornwall, police said on Friday. "Tragically, a man aged in his 50s was located deceased within the caravan," stated Devon and Cornwall police, as reported by AFP. Storm Goretti brought fierce winds up to 160 kmph, causing severe damage across Cornwall and parts of Wales overnight from Thursday to Friday. The high winds knocked down trees and damaged power lines, leaving tens of thousands of homes without electricity. The UK Met Office warned that much of the country still faced snow and ice risks on Saturday, with black ice threatening Scotland and northern England. Earlier snow had already forced about 250 schools in Scotland to close after Christmas. National Grid reported around 28,000 homes remained without power in southwest England and the Midlands at the weekend’s start. The storm also hit northern Europe. France had nearly 100,000 homes without electricity Saturday morning. In Germany, long-distance rail services restarted on Saturday after a full stop caused by Storm Elli, although some routes, especially in Hamburg, stayed suspended due to heavy snow. Across Europe, at least 15 people died this week from weather-related incidents. These storms and freezing temperatures disrupted travel, forced school closures, and cut power to hundreds of thousands.
