FIR Filed Against Punjab Congress MLAs for Sharing Controversial Atishi Video
January 10, 2026
On January 9, 2026, Punjab Congress said an FIR was lodged against MLAs Sukhpal Khaira and Pargat Singh. The FIR is related to sharing a video clip of AAP leader Atishi. BJP accused Atishi of making derogatory remarks against the ninth Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur in the Delhi Assembly. Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, condemned the FIR. He called it “a blatant abuse of State power” and a “shameful attempt to divert attention.” Bajwa said Punjab Police under CM Bhagwant Mann is misused for harassment instead of law and order. He warned, “intimidation will not break our resolve.” The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate confirmed the FIR was based on a complaint by Iqbal Singh about an “edited and doctored” video of Atishi. The video was downloaded from Delhi BJP Law Minister Kapil Mishra’s social media and sent to the forensic lab for examination. Sukhpal Khaira described the FIR as “extreme political vendetta” by Bhagwant Mann’s government. Khaira said the Delhi Assembly speaker gave a privilege notice to Jalandhar Police Commissioner as the video is property of the Delhi Assembly. Speaker Vijender Gupta said strict action will be taken against the police commissioner for the breach of privilege. Atishi refuted BJP’s claims, calling it “petty politics.” She said her speech was about BJP avoiding pollution talks and stray dog protests. Atishi stated BJP inserted a false subtitle including Guru Tegh Bahadur’s name. She asserted her respect for the Guru and rejected the insult allegations. The controversy deepens the political tension between Punjab Congress, AAP, and BJP at the state and central levels.
