Trump Doubles Down: US Will Act on Greenland, Warns Iran on Protest Crackdown
January 10, 2026
US President Donald Trump has intensified his threats on Greenland, saying the US is "going to do something [there] whether they like it or not." Speaking at a White House meeting with oil and gas executives, Trump said, "If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland. And we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor." He added, "So we’re going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way."
This stance comes amid rising tension with NATO allies, especially Denmark, over Trump's repeated attempts to control Greenland, which is largely autonomous. Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the US position. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that "a US attack on Greenland would mean the end of NATO and therefore post second world war security," but Trump insisted he supports NATO, saying, "If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have a NATO right now."
Trump first expressed interest in Greenland in 2019, facing swift opposition. He has recently revived the idea, calling Greenland a national security imperative. Polls show 85% of Greenlanders oppose being part of the US, and only 7% of Americans support a US military invasion.
Apart from Greenland, Trump also warned Iran amid rising protests. Describing Iran as in "big trouble," he said, "If they start killing people like they have in the past, we will get involved. We’ll be hitting them very hard where it hurts." He cautioned Iranian leaders: "You’d better not start shooting, because we’ll start shooting too."
