West Bengal’s ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has deleted about 58 lakh voters. These include people marked as dead, absent, shifted, duplicate, or fictitious. The voter list in the state dropped from 7.66 crore to 7.08 crore. Sanjay Mahato, a truck driver from Kolkata Port Assembly, found his name deleted last month because he was away for work. Now he and his wife have to reapply to vote. Sambhu Vidyalaya polling booth in his area saw a sharp drop from 1,023 voters to less than 300 after 732 names were removed. Many affected are migrant workers in jute mill areas who lack land or property papers. Krishna Rai, a jute mill worker, said, "I have been casting my vote here for decades now. When the BLO had come to distribute forms, I had gone back to my village to visit my family." He fears the online application process. The Kolkata Port Assembly segment alone saw around 63,730 deletions, about 26% of its electorate. The city recorded the highest deletion percentage in West Bengal, not border districts as BJP claimed. Political parties are divided. CM Mamata Banerjee criticized the excerpts of the process causing anxiety and asked the Election Commission to fix errors or stop SIR. BJP defends the exercise, claiming it cleans the rolls of illegal voters. Fifteen Matua-dominated seats, mostly migrant refugees, reported an average 33.95% deletions, sparking fears among Hindu refugees seeking citizenship. Many summoned for hearings cannot produce legacy documents. Even famous figures like Nobel laureate Amartya Sen received hearing notices, later exempted by the Election Commission for overseas voters. The SIR continues amid calls for clarity and fairness while aiming to remove dead, duplicate, and shifted voters before upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal and other states.
