BJP Protests Over Kogilu Layout Housing; Demolition Victims Rally This Sunday
January 3, 2026
The BJP has announced a protest on January 5 against what it calls special treatment for Kogilu Layout residents. Meanwhile, those who lost homes in a recent demolition plan a public rally on Sunday.
R. Ashok, Leader of Opposition in Karnataka, visited the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation Limited (RGHCL) office on Saturday. He said about 65,000 people have applied for housing schemes under RGHCL. Ashok said these applicants should get priority over those who encroached on government land in Kogilu Layout.
"About 7,000 houses have been built under various schemes," Ashok said. "Another 10,000 houses are under construction. An 80-year-old woman has paid the full amount but has not yet been given a house. She has been running around for four months. The house lacks water and electricity. She lives in a rented house and fears eviction. Thousands of Kannadigas are waiting for houses."
He also accused illegal Bangladeshis of living among those who lost their homes. "Genealogy should be mandatory when giving houses," Ashok demanded.
Meanwhile, a complaint has been filed with the Karnataka State Minorities Commission against Ashok. It claims his remarks at the demolished Fakeer Layout site were hate speech and incited against minority communities.
On Saturday, a BJP fact-finding team led by MLA S.R. Vishwanath visited the demolition site, causing some tension. Vishwanath said the committee will submit its report soon to BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra. "We will submit the report to the Governor and eventually take the issue to court," he added.
