Congress Calls Centre's 90-Day Gig Worker Rule 'Too Little, Too Late'
January 3, 2026
On January 3, 2026, Congress called the Central government's proposal for a 90-day work rule to qualify gig workers for social security "too little, too late." Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Modi government has woken up late to the urgent need for dignified work conditions for gig workers. He added the Centre's vision is weaker than steps taken by Congress-ruled states like Telangana, Rajasthan, and Karnataka.
Ramesh listed measures from these states including welfare funds from a 1% to 5% transaction fee, tripartite welfare boards for registration and fee collection, and strict rules preventing termination without written reason and 14 days' notice. Platforms must also provide safe work, fair contracts, rest breaks, and sanitary facilities.
He said, "The protection of gig workers was a key pillar of the Congress party's five-point Yuva Nyay agenda during the 2024 Lok Sabha election." The party sees the need for strong laws protecting gig and unorganised sector workers and stands firmly with them, as stated in the NYAY PATH Resolution from April 9, 2025.
Congress urges the government to go beyond current proposals and truly safeguard workers' rights across India.
