Indian Army Signs ₹293 Crore Deal for Advanced Suryastra Rocket Launcher System
January 3, 2026
The Indian Army has signed a ₹292.69 crore contract with private defence maker NIBE Limited to supply the advanced Suryastra rocket launcher system. This system can strike targets at 150 km and 300 km ranges. The deal was confirmed by NIBE in a letter to BSE and NSE on January 3, 2026.
Suryastra is India's first made-in-India universal multi-calibre rocket launcher. It delivers precise surface-to-surface strikes with a very low circular error probable of less than five metres. It can engage several targets at once and fire different types of rockets. It also fires loitering munitions up to 100 km, allowing flexible operations.
NIBE signed a Technology Collaboration Agreement with Israel’s Elbit Systems in July 2025 to manufacture the Suryastra system in India. This is a big step in supporting the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push.
The Defence Acquisition Council cleared emergency procurement powers allowing contracts up to ₹300 crore without extra approvals until January 15, 2026. Such deals must start deliveries within six months and finish in a year.
Recently, DRDO chairman Samir V. Kamat announced new versions of the Pinaka rocket system with ranges of 120 km and 300 km will be made soon. These are expected to join the Army in three to five years.
This new rocket launcher contract strengthens India’s long-range artillery and operational reach with cutting-edge indigenous technology.
