December 17, 2025
On December 16, 2025, several rounds of gunfire were reported near Torbung and Phougakchao Ikhai areas close to Churachandpur district in Manipur. The shots were fired around 9 p.m. Officials said nobody was hurt and no fresh firing happened after the incident. A senior official confirmed, "Nobody was injured in the incident. The situation remains calm but tense in the district, with no reports of fresh firing. Additional security forces have also been deployed in the peripheral areas of Bishnupur." Police investigations are ongoing, but no arrests have been made yet. These areas were among the first to face ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which began on May 3, 2023. Many displaced people, especially women and children, who had returned home near Phougakchao Ikhai after nearly two years, fled again following the firing. This incident came hours after Manipur Director General of Police Rajiv Singh visited Churachandpur district and held a meeting with senior officers. The DGP chaired a "comprehensive review meeting to assess the prevailing security situation and preparedness," according to a police statement.
