The Deputy Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department, V. Lakshminath, has asked the Urban Development Department (UDD) to ban feeding pigeons in public spots across Bengaluru. The Health Department wants rules for the Greater Bengaluru Authority and all municipal corporations to stop pigeon feeding where it causes nuisance or health dangers. Feeding may happen only in special zones, controlled timings, and under care by NGOs or charities. Officers will give on-the-spot warnings, fines, or start legal action against violators. The move aims to reduce pigeon droppings and feathers that cause health problems in crowded areas. Medical experts warn that long exposure to droppings may cause respiratory illnesses like hypersensitivity pneumonitis and serious lung damage, especially in vulnerable people. The letter dated December 16 notes similar rules in Mumbai after the Bombay High Court's order. Legal powers cited include sections 270, 271, and 272 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, about public nuisance and disease spread, plus the Greater Bengaluru Authority Act, 2025 and Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976. The Health Department also calls for public campaigns to educate citizens about risks, penalties, and kinder ways to protect birds. This marks a firm step toward cleaner, healthier public spaces in Bengaluru.
