Sajid Akram, 50, one of the two attackers who killed at least 16 people at a Jewish event on December 14, 2025, at Bondi Beach, Australia, is originally from Hyderabad, India. Indian government officials conducting a background check told The Hindu that Akram last visited India in 2022. He moved to Australia on a student visa in 1998 and lived mostly there. Officials said, “His father died in 2017; he did not even come to attend his last rites.” Akram’s family lives in Hyderabad. His elder brother is a doctor, and his late father retired from the army in the UAE in 1984. Sajid’s son Naveed Akram, the other attacker, is 24 years old and an Australian citizen born in 2001. The son survived police action and is in hospital. Akram had completed a commerce degree in Hyderabad before moving to Australia. There, he married a European woman but kept his Indian passport. Officials say, “Preliminary investigation does not establish any local links so far.” Australian authorities are cooperating with Indian officials. Philippine immigration confirmed that Sajid Akram and his son arrived in the Philippines from Sydney on November 1, 2025, using an Indian passport for Sajid and Australian nationality for Naveed. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs did not comment on these details. Australian officials have so far declined to discuss the attackers' origins. When asked if Sajid Akram was from India or Pakistan, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “Such details were part of the investigation” and declined to elaborate.
