Chennai woke up to a fresh spell of rain on Tuesday morning, December 16, 2025, following the dry days after Cyclone Ditwah. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) predicted light to moderate rain over coastal and delta districts. Tirunelveli and Tenkasi could get isolated heavy showers. Parts of Chennai including the city core, Perambur, Tambaram, and Red Hills recorded moderate showers from early Tuesday. This rain, mostly light to moderate, is expected to continue in some parts of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday due to a minor weather system and wind convergence. The RMC also said rainfall will be mainly over south Tamil Nadu, while the north may return to dry weather by December 18. In the last 24 hours leading to 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Tamil Nadu was mostly dry except Pamban in Ramanathapuram district, which had 1 cm of rain. Coimbatore airport noted the coldest plain temperature at 19.4°C. The rain in Chennai should raise night temperatures a bit for two days. The RMC expects minimum temperatures around 23-24°C on Tuesday and a warmer night with light rain on Wednesday too. Since October 1, Tamil Nadu received 42 cm of rainfall, about 2% above the normal seasonal average. The RMC's nowcast, valid till 4 p.m., forecasts moderate rainfall in Villupuram, Chennai, and nearby districts. Light to moderate rain is also predicted along the coast from Cuddalore to Kanniyakumari.
