Kerala police have registered a case against Sayed Ali Majeed, a local CPI(M) leader, for making offensive remarks against women. Majeed spoke at a meeting in Kodakkal, Malappuram, on Sunday. His speech went viral on social media and drew sharp criticism. The complaint was filed by Jameela, a women activist of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). She accused Majeed of slandering her and her female colleagues with objectionable words. The FIR states that Majeed threatened them by saying women should enter politics only if they are ready to face such remarks. He also warned IUML women workers, "they would have to hear such slanders again," according to the complaint. In a video seen on TV channels, Majeed is seen speaking from atop an open vehicle to cheering party workers. He accused the IUML of trying to defeat him using women and dared the police to book him for his remarks. The police registered the case under sections 351(3) for criminal intimidation and 79 for insulting the modesty of women. An investigation is underway. Further action will follow, said the police. Majeed was recently elected as a panchayat member in local civic polls.
