The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is set to boost Mysuru’s public transport as the city expands. Post Karnataka government’s approval for Greater Mysuru, KSRTC plans for the next 10 years. Passenger numbers have doubled or tripled in the last 2.5 years. To meet future demand, KSRTC’s Mysuru City Division will propose four new bus depots in Yelwal, Bannur Road, H.D. Kote Road, and Bogadi. The division currently runs three depots: Kuvempunagar, Sathagalli, and Vijayanagar. Divisional Controller Veeresh K. T. said, “We want to strengthen the public transport network for the convenience of commuters by providing improved and efficient mobility.” He noted that the number of two-wheelers has doubled since 2011 and four-wheelers have risen too, making enhanced public transport necessary. KSRTC plans to ask Mysuru Development Authority (MDA) for CA (City Acquired) sites to build these depots. Building a full depot needs at least six acres, while a bus terminus requires two acres. Daily, KSRTC runs 517 schedules, with nearly 390 inside the city, serving roughly 3.9 to 4.16 lakh passengers. Veeresh added, “Encouraging public transport will help reduce road congestion and pollution.” He also compared Mysuru to Bengaluru’s BMTC, which increased depots from 32 in 2011 to 50 today to meet growing needs. If KSRTC secures the land, detailed project plans will follow to prepare Mysuru for a smarter future.
