Hospital Blood Supply Exhausted Saving Wellness Influencer After Free Home Birth in Melbourne
December 10, 2025
Stacey Warnecke, 30, died after giving birth at her Melbourne home on September 29. She had chosen a free birth with her husband Nathan and unregulated doula Emily Lal. Though her baby was healthy, Stacey's health dropped fast due to heavy bleeding. Paramedics found her struggling to breathe near the birthing pool. She was taken to Frankston hospital where doctors used all the hospital's supply of her blood type in an attempt to save her, but she died. Doctors suspect she died from complications of postpartum haemorrhage. Police were informed. Nathan gave a statement but Lal refused. Investigators found Lal had extensively cleaned the home after the birth. Stacey had declined all pregnancy healthcare, including ultrasounds and midwife visits. She wanted a chemical-free, natural lifestyle and was influenced by Covid-19 mandates. Lal, who calls herself a free birth “keeper” on social media, is under investigation by Victoria's health complaints commissioner for risking mothers and babies. The coroner will hear statements from Lal and medical staff in March for a full investigation.
